The Periplus describes in some detail the shore of what was to become northern Somalia. Ships sailed from there to western India to bring back cotton cloth, grain, oil, sugar, and ghee, while others moved down the Red Sea to the East African coast bringing cloaks, tunics, copper, and tin. Aromatic gums, tortoiseshell, ivory, and slaves were traded in return. Azania Because of offshore islands, better landing places, and wetter climate, Arab traders from about seem to have preferred the East African coast to the south of modern Somalia. They sailed there with the northeast monsoon , returning home in the summer with the southwest. They dubbed the part of the coast to which they sailed Azania, or the Land of Zanj —by which they meant the land of the blacks and by which they knew it until the 10th century. South of Sarapion, Nikon, the Pyralaae Islands, and the island of Diorux about whose precise location only speculation seems possible , the chief town was Rhapta, which may lie buried in the Rufiji delta of present-day Tanzania. Here the situation differed somewhat from that in the north, and, though tortoiseshell and rhinoceros horn were exported from there—as were quantities of ivory and coconut oil—no mention is made of slaves. Mafia Island , which lies out to sea here, could perhaps be Menouthias, the only island named in both the Periplus and the Guide, although this could also be either Pemba or Zanzibar perhaps there has been a conflation of all three in the one name.

By the last decades of the 18th century the philosophical, stylistic and financial certainties of the mid eighteenth century were already undermined by exposure to different cultures.
Improved transport and trade changed both cultural perceptions and social structures. The neo classical designs of the last two decades of the century were only the beginning of a natural progression to even stronger departures from the old English forms. The neo classical influence of the 18th century, which in the case of tea caddies translated itself in straight shapes and stylised ornaments, developed in the early 19th century to the adaptation of classical architectural forms and shapes in the construction of boxes.

Parallel to this the Chinese influence was also felt, as was the inspiration derived from the heavier Egyptian classicism. Tentatively at first tea caddy makers began to experiment with these new shapes. Some caddies made in the first decade of the century have ‘pagoda’ tops, or tapered sides.

Recipes Madhur Jaffrey recipes: Anglo-Indian sausage patties We eat these with eggs on Sundays, ensconced between slices of bread as sandwiches, or I put them into a curry, just as Anglo-Indian families have being doing over the years, says Madhur Jaffrey. He handed these to the butcher and then watched as his choice of meat was minced, seasoned and pushed into casings.
I made a note of the recipe and now make those sausages all the time, but I do not always bother with the casings: I make sausage patties instead.

In the beginning of the 20th century, when England still held reign over India and Sri Lanka, it was common practice for European men, despite having wives already, to consort with Indian women, especially those who were underage.
It was in the capitol of Sri Lanka, still known as Ceylon, that a young Eurasian girl, Charlotte Constance, all of 14 years and nine months gave birth to the daughter of an Irish foreman, Henry Alfred Selby. Eurasians, and in India, known as the Anglo — Indians, were at cultural crossroads at the wake of the century.

The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before the Anglo Indian boxes were made. It was a technique, which required a high degree of skill and patience. It was executed very lavishly, in that the frequent cuts wasted a great amount of the precious materials used.
The workmanship was however more than commensurable to the value of the materials.
Many of the Anglo-Indian sons born of such parents in India were sent to England for higher education, so they could have good careers, and the daughters were married off to prominent English colonials.
TNN Jan 4, , The last day of Christmas celebrations at Bow Barracks was marked by a new beginning – a New Year resolution to move out of the shadows of their colonial past – as Errol O’ Brien unveiled his new book, The Anglo-Indian Way, on Thursday. The paperback looks the community in the eye, profiling some of its most extraordinary men and women who have done them proud.
Although this community has been an integral part of Kolkata’s heritage, dating back years to the first European settlers in India, it has always been subjected to insecurity and a hankering to cling to the past. Well, not any more. From Henry Derozio and Frank Anthony to Ruskin Bond and Diana Hayden, the book is about those who excelled in all walks of life as leaders, politicians, police officers, actors, teachers, jockeys, sportsmen, engine drivers, writers, quizmasters and many more.
It’s a glimpse of history as it was being lived, an inspiring record of life stories,” said O’Brien. He confessed, “My selection is inherently incomplete; it was constrained by time and space. I cannot tell you how interesting it was writing all this stuff. When I phoned Diana Hayden she happily talked at length.

He was all of 80 years and appeared frail, his body subjected to the natural ravages of time and loneliness which more often than not is the bane of human existence.
But what stood out was a spark that lit his eyes with brilliant illumination as he talked about McCluskieganj, his beloved McCluskieganj! We are symptomatic of the biggest problem facing the global Anglo-Indian community – it is dying out. In the UK and the Commonwealth, it is losing its “Indianness”, while back home in India its “Anglo” element is fading. The definition of Anglo-Indian has become looser in recent decades. It can now denote any mixed British-Indian parentage, but for many its primary meaning refers to people of longstanding mixed lineage, dating back up to years into the subcontinent’s colonial past.

The Revolution of Moore and Russell: Moore led the way, but I followed closely in his footsteps I felt…a great liberation, as if I had escaped from a hot house onto a windswept headland. At the end of the 19th century, F. Bradley, Bernard Bosanquet, and J. McTaggart were the leading British Idealists. They claimed that the world, although it naively appears to us to be a collection of discrete objects this bird, that table, the earth and the sun, and so forth , is really a single indivisible whole whose nature is mental, or spiritual, or Ideal rather than material.
Thus, idealism was a brand of metaphysical monism, but not a form of materialism, the other leading form of metaphysical monism. Their claim was not that the objects of ordinary experience do not exist, but that they are not, as we normally take them to be, discrete.
