If we are lucky it may have a brass name plate fitted and occasionally they come with some of their original contents ; this example is one of those. This Ditty Box is to standard form and size and made from pine which has been lightly waxed. Inside the pen tray remains in place but the letter bars in the lid were missing so we have replaced these and it would be hard to tell these were not the issue items.
To the front panel evidence exists to show where an original name plaque was mounted, just below the key hole. It would seem this was replaced by a custom made silvered example mounted in a recessed slot in the front top of the lid ; this is named to A. The key was missing when purchased, as are the lock clasp locating lugs on the inside lid.
We suspect this was removed when the key was lost and the lugs cut to gain access, as often seems to have happened with these items. The brass lock is still fitted although in a locked position. We have added a period key which fits the lock but does not operate it but is fine for display purposes. Inside the box is lightly stained and shows signs of use with minor repairs to the rear of the lid.

The responsibilities of a sergeant differ from army to army. There are usually several ranks of sergeant, each corresponding to greater experience and responsibility for the daily lives of the soldiers of larger units.
Sergeants are usually team leaders in charge of an entire team of constables to senior constables at large stations, to being in charge of sectors involving several police stations. What is a army officer? An Army officer is either a soldier chosen by his superiors by showing either bravery, good leadership skills. Or in the U. Army, the officers are 2nd Lt. MORE What does a sergeant in the army do? There is more than one level of sergeant in most armies. The British Army has no OR-5 grade. Although certain ranks are normally associated with specific roles, the rank of a soldier cannot be assumed from his role.
Using the British Army as an example, it is not uncommon for a non-commissioned officer or a warrant officer or a commissioned officer to fill a role normally assigned to a higher rank than he holds, when he would be referred to as acting that rank. By example, a British Army corporal filling the role of a platoon sergeant would be considered an Acting Sergeant. This may be a temporary assignment, due to having no one of the appropriate rank immediately available, or it may be that the assignment is permanent, but the soldier cannot be promoted immediately due to procedural issues for instance, a common date is set annually for all scheduled promotions to go into effect.
It is also not uncommon for an NCO to receive a promotion but to continue serving in the role normally assigned to his previous rank ’til a more suitable position is available. A Sergeant might be promoted to Colour-Sergeant, but continue in the role of platoon sergeant ’til a role normally filled by a Colour-Sergeant becomes available. A sergeant in a support trade or specialisation within a battalion, may not be able to move to a role normally requiring a higher rank without moving out of the battalion structure, or changing his specialisation, such as moving into a rifle company as a Company Quartermaster, from which the next step would normally be promotion to Warrant Officer 2 and the role of a Company Sergeant Major or a Training Warrant Officer.
